Competition for the Playstation Move System
Nintendo's Wii Controller
The first motion controller system on the market was the controllers which are a part of the Nintendo Wii system, the controller also uses accelerometers to sense its position in 3D space, when pointed at the LEDs in the sensor bar.It also uses bluetooth technology to connect to the controller it is also bundled with a 'nunchuk' controller which has two buttons and a joystick, this other controller is physically connected to the wii remote, so is far more restrictive than the move controllers. It also has connections on it which enable it to be held as a old style 'light gun' and steering wheel.Being the first motion controller on the market it had the strong influence on the market,as the 'new' and was very successful, unfortunately it was seen as a fad and without any huge or successful games being produced to use the technology on the wii, it's sales declined and is a shown as joke within the gaming world.
Microsofts Xbox Kinect
Released after the Playstation Move, but seem to take up much more of the news about that time,is the motion controller by Microsoft, unlike both the Wii and Playstation Move controllers, there are no controllers!
You control the xbox through a series of gestures and spoken commands that the sensor bar understands, it uses an RGB camera, depth sensor and multi-array microphone running software developed by Microsoft. It is able to track up to 6 people including two active players for motion analysis.
As Microsoft also develop windows, they have made software development kit for the Kinect, so it can be connected to pc's and used and also have other applications can be made for it,the SDK contained features such as raw sensor streams, skeletal tracking, advanced audio capabilities such as speech recognition.
By opening the source code for the kinect system many interesting developments using it have opened up, the most common use of it is for motion capture for CG/Games,I myself soley bought a kinect to try this out and it was pretty good, although it was a tad choppy at times and would need cleaning up in motion builder.
A team of developers in MIT combined the Kinect with the IRobot Create to map a room in 3D and have the robot respond to human gestures. One team has managed to use it to track people in complete darkness, for video surveillance system.Topshop in Moscow set up a kinect kiosk that could overlay dresses onto the live video feed of customer, through the tracking methods, when customers turned the dresses would move to.
Playstation Move Role
Playstation move could become more commercial and open up it's software and hardware to developers to create all number of things, not just for games , but could have be used as a platform to train people in dealing with dangerous chemicals or substances without the need of the person standing there. Using the motion controls to control robot limbs etc. Also with the use of this and further development,I think we are very close to being able to do things such as this in Iron Man.
